Adrianne Haslet-Davis dances again for the first time since the Boston terrorist attack last year.

When the bombs went off at the Boston Marathon finish line, Adrianne Haslet-Davis lost the lower half of her left leg in the explosion. She’s a ballroom dance teacher, and she assumed she would never dance again. With most prosthetics, she wouldn’t.

But Hugh Herr, of the MIT Media Lab, wanted to find a way to help her. He created a bionic limb specifically for dancers, studying the way they move and adapting the limb to fit their motion. (He explains how he did it here.)

At TED2014, Adrianne danced for the first time since the attack, wearing the bionic limb that Hugh created for her.

Hugh says, “It was 3.5 seconds between the bomb blasts in the Boston terrorist attack. In 3.5 seconds, the criminals and cowards took Adrianne off the dance floor. In 200 days, we put her back. We will not be intimidated, brought down, diminished, conquered or stopped by acts of violence.”

Amen to that, Hugh.

While they were shooting, J.J. Abrams invited me to lunch and invited me to come to the set. I was so excited. The surprise he had going was that the young woman playing Uhura didn’t know I was coming. She just gasped.
As J.J. had planned it, she didn’t have to shoot, so we sat for two hours and talked, and it was as though I had known her all her life. I was so honored. I thought I was seeing myself — I knew I was in good hands. She just picked my brain.
When I see her come on, that’s me and I’m living it. A little ways into the movie, I realized she had taken to heart what I said and became more reserved and tighter. I’m so proud of her. She took a role that was established and gave it life.
Now I know who I was before I got on that ship for that first mission. It’s so exciting for me and rewarding. J.J. and she did me honor.

Americans Breathing Easier With Fewer Particulates In The Air

by Michael Keller

We may not have noticed it, but Americans are breathing a little easier thanks to a great story for the country’s air quality.

A Rice University study concludes that states are successfully reducing a harmful air pollutant called fine particulate matter less than 2.5 micrometers (PM2.5) in diameter, which can stay suspended in the atmosphere for weeks and has been linked to chronic and fatal diseases.

In fact, the study found that state efforts have been so successful that most urban areas had already lowered PM2.5 to more stringent levels instituted in 2012 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The improvements are good enough to translate into Americans living slightly longer lives.

“The trend across the country is that air quality is improving,” says Daniel Cohan, an atmospheric researcher and associate professor of environmental engineering. “Power plants are getting better at controlling emissions. There are more industrial controls to pollution. Cars are getting cleaner.”

Kanji explanation:

Image 1: The bottom-left cartouche features the kanji 鳴戸, which is read naruto, meaning ‘whirlpool’. (Note: uzumaki has a similar meaning, translated as ‘maelstrom’.)

The top-right cartouche contains the kanji 古祟翻恵, loosely meaning “An ancient curse becomes a blessing”.

Image 2: The top-left cartouche contains the symbols 龍毬, literally meaning ‘dragon’ and ‘orb’.

The bottom-right cartouche features the kanji 不憩奮励, meaning ‘Never resting, striving higher’.

_____________________________________________________

Image 3: The left cartouche features the kanji 末撓気師, literally meaning “the last bending air master”.

The right cartouche contains the characters 土火気水, which mean ‘earth, fire, air, water’.

I am a big admirer of Jed Henry’s art and all that he has done to sustain and spread the craft of traditional Japanese woodblock printing. I have been meaning to contact him about doing a print for our show for a while now, and also just to tell him how much I love his work. So I am overjoyed that he chose Avatar as the subject for one of his wonderful reinterpretations, the third beautiful image here. So cool! Thanks, Jed! I hope we connect soon.

For the Moon Animate Make - Up project!

The original is just as static… so I decided to just go really detailed on the design and keep it stationary (except for mouth flaps, but even those are minimal).

Also it starts with a pan up but tumblr’s video app or whatever is so terrible!

So here’s a still version:

I wish I had the ability to have done more shots, but alas!  Maybe for the next collaborative project!

AHHH! This is awesome! :D Lovely design!
